Leaf-peeping season is back, which means now’s the time to head outdoors for brisk hikes, chilling campfire tales. So, here are some of our favorite places to visit this October for a perfect fall getaway.
(Note: Travel might be complicated right now. Some of the below destinations may be affected by the coronavirus outbreak. Check with the CDC and the U.S. Department of State before traveling.)
Asheville, NC
Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, Asheville is perhaps best known as the location of George Vanderbilt's Biltmore Estate and the home of major American novelist, Thomas Wolfe.
Quaint mountain town. Hipster haven. Beer City USA. Outdoorsman's retreat. College town. Bluegrass home. Culinary destination. Try as you might, it's impossible to give Asheville just one label.
Asheville's proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Appalachian Trail means the views of fall foliage are unparalleled. Visit the city and enjoy sampling the city's tasty craft beers. Asheville is home to more than 20 breweries serving roughly 100 local brews.
Located in western North Carolina just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, the city is an unexpected gem, where a vibrant arts scene intertwines with Southern traditions and beautiful scenery.
Grand Canyon, AZ
Grand Canyon is a year-round spectacular experience. Each season introduces something unique to the rims. Travel to Grand Canyon and enjoy stunning natural scenery, perfect for hiking (though you'll want to arrive before mid-October if you want to trek the popular North Rim Trail, which closes seasonally due to snow). For additional scenery, book a trip along the Grand Canyon Railway. As you ride north from Williams, Arizona, to the Grand Canyon, you'll be treated to views of a variety of animals and plants
Charleston, SC
Excellent option for a fall getaway to explore the rich history of the Holy City and the historic cobblestone streets of The Battery.
The city offers a cozy feel this time of year with numerous events, fairs and festivals roll. During your visit, you can witness a water skiing competition and get a taste of culture at the Moja Arts Festival. If you'd rather participate in traditional fall activities like hayrides, picking pumpkins and treks through corn mazes, head to Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens.
San Francisco, CA
San Francisco is always beautiful and there are plenty of things to see and do year-round, but in terms of weather, fall really is the best time to visit.
The temperatures are warmer than the rainy winters and it's sunnier outside, without that morning fog that's common in the summer.
- Head out of the city to enjoy a hayride or corn maze.
- Go on a whale watch near the end of the season to see migrating whales.
- Listen to free music performances in Golden Gate Park.
- Sample the fall produce at the Ferry Building Farmer's Market.
Telluride, CO
Telluride is a beautiful mountain town, tucked in a remote corner of southwest Colorado, offering plenty to do and see in fall. The town boasts trails for hikers of all abilities and perfect hiking conditions. Take a ride on one of the town's famous gondolas (trust us: it's the perfect way to snap pictures of Telluride's gorgeous fall foliage).
Salt Lake City, UT
Autumn means two things: gorgeous foliage and smaller crowds.
Check out the Utah State Fair, complete with a rodeo. If you also want to ski, there are usually opportunities for that at the end of October. Visit:
- The Utah State Capitol Building has some of the best views of Salt Lake's
- Memory Grove Park in CityCreek Canyon.
- CityCreek Canyon is perfect for hiking and biking.
- Enjoy the peaceful fountains at CityCreek Center while you admire the Autumn
- Drive or bike and take in the sights of Millcreek Canyon.
